PREPARING FOR A CO-OP INTERVIEW |
Are you ready for an interview with your possible future neighbours? Are you nervous? Don't worry - just review the notes below and you will do fine!
First of all, is your household a good fit for a housing co-op? Answer the following to find out:
If you answered yes to most or all of the above you could be a good fit for a housing co-op. Read on! If you answered no to most of the above, perhaps you should consider alternative housing. Please be courteous by contacting the co-op to cancel the interview. O.K., you think you would be a good fit for a co-op. You have applied to a co-op and have been called into an interview. Now what? First, be prepared to be interviewed by 3 or more people. Most interviews are conducted by a committee to ensure equality of treatment. This can be intimidating to walk into - but don't worry, the people are usually friendly and are eager to make you feel comfortable. If you greet everyone warmly they should reciprocate. Second, be prepared to give a little bit of background about you and your family (if applicable). You should bring everyone in your household, if practical, so the committee can get to know who will be moving in. Talk about your interests and how you have contributed to a community or other large group. Third, review your volunteer experience. Be specific - what have you done that has made a difference for others? Did you have a title? What were your responsibilities? How many people did you serve? If you don't have any formal volunteer experience, have you ever organized family events, such as special anniversaries? Fourth, what have you done professionally that show your management or other skills? Do you manage people in your work? Do you have computer skills? Carpentry skills? Negotiating or mediation skills? What can you do that would contribute to running a housing co-op? Finally, be friendly and show off your good side. Demonstrate that you would be a warm, friendly neighbour and you will be on your way to joining one of the best forms of housing in Canada! Good luck!
